Slacker Tip #208 - Get Past Your Company’s Firewall
When it comes to work-related mischief, nothing is more aggravating than trying to surf the ‘net on company time only to realize that the security settings on your computer prevent you from pulling up half of the sites where you want to waste time.
Except for maybe going to a proxy server to get around the firewall and discovering that the company has blocked the proxies too.
You can start fiddling with the settings on the Internet Security tab if you think you’ve got the stuff. But turn off the wrong thing and see how much attention that gets you. Not that it’s not worth the risk. If you change your settings and return to your browser to discover that you have regained access to Facebook and all of your favorite porn sites, you will feel both deliriously happy and validated in your awesomeness.
But why put so much effort into something that can be accomplished with so little. Before you go all IT-Ninja on your computer settings, why not try just downloading a new browser. Generally-speaking, work computers have only one browser installed, usually Internet Explorer, and the Internet security settings are all linked to that browser. So, pop on over to the download page for Google Chrome or FireFox and nab a new browser.
It’s possible that your company has prepared for such anarchy, but that would be more work. Do you really think the guys in IT are any more motivated than you?
