The biggest threat to slackers
Those of you that are seasoned slackers at work like myself already know what the biggest threat to slackers is. It is the so-called “perfect employee” in the office. Oftentimes this person refers to themselves as a “perfect employee.” I like to think of this person as a “goody two shoes,” an office “do-gooder,” a “suck-up” and a general nuisance.
All offices have this person. The threat level can vary from office to office and is usually dependent upon how close your desk is to this person and if they have an actual position of power or just the usual perceived position of power. I mean, let’s face it, most of the time this person can have the same or a lower job title than you but still think that they are a supervisor with power over you.
Their power lies in their ability to be a tattle tale.
Any time they perceive you to be doing something that they think you shouldn’t be doing then they run and tattle to the boss. So, the farther away from this person you sit the less of a threat they are. Of course, I have worked at places in the past where this person worked on the complete other side of the room but walked by my desk at least hourly for no reason. Despite their perseverance I was able to stay on that job for a full six months!
So, what can be done about this threat? And how you can you identify the threat in your office?
Sadly, they don’t all look the same and they vary in age. However, there are some typical characteristics you can look for in the office to more easily identify your target so that you can avoid them. Here are some things to be on the lookout for:
- someone that walks by your desk/cubicle multiple times throughout the day for no apparent reason
- someone that actually comes to your desk/into your cubicle several times a day or just daily
- someone that comes to you to ask you something but pays more attention to your computer screen while talking than to your face
- someone that comes up with “good ideas” for the company that just result in more work for everyone else
- someone that is always in the office of the boss sucking up or just generally extra friendly with them
- someone that is always at work early and always stays late
- someone that gives out their phone number before going on vacation and actually calls/stops by work while on vacation
- someone that skips breaks at work b/c they are so dedicated to the company
- someone that schedules their breaks around yours so that they can keep a better eye on you
- someone with a righteous attitude that always worries about what is best for the company
- someone that doesn’t use all of their vacation days each year
- someone that comes to work sick ON PURPOSE b/c they think their job is so important
- probably the person that trains you at a new job
