Being Sick Excuse #45 – the family emergency
Sometimes the best excuses to get out of work are the vague ones. Enter the family emergency.
What is great about using a family emergency for your excuse is that there is really no limit on the amount of time you can get off work. If you have family in another state and your boss & co-workers know this then you can easily get several days off work by simply calling in and saying “I have a family emergency and have to go out of town for a few days.”
Using this particular excuse also sends the message that it is personl and you should not get anyone asking any details. And if they do, you can just reply that it is a personal family matter.
My advice is to use this excuse on a Monday or Tuesday and use it to get the rest of the week off. And be sure to return on the following Monday. Your boss will proably want to know when you will be back. You can play this one of two ways.
- You can offer to call the boss after you “get to your family” with an ETA of your return.
- You can say something like “I should be able to get back by Monday” or “It shouldn’t take more than a few days so I can plan on coming back on Monday unless I call to tell you otherwise.”
If you decide to go with #1 then I suggest calling back with your arrival time when no one is in the office! That way you can avoid any questions. And remember that the company voice mail may give the number you are calling from – this means use your cell phone or be in the state you told your boss you were going to!

All you have to say is that you have a ” family emergency.” No one will ask for proof because they have no idea what it is. Think about it. It could be anything from granny fell down the stairs to uncle Billy drove his car into a lake. If anyone asks for details, just say that it’s personal. The end.
