Being Sick Excuse #44 - frozen water, busted pipes

This time of year is ripe with scenarios that you can use to get out of work and take your own snow day.

If you live some place where it gets pretty cold - cold enough for pipes to freeze - then you could use this excuse.

It is really a simple excuse with no possible way for your employer to ask for a note or the like.

The key here is to not wait to the last minute to call in. Obviously if your pipes are going to freeze and bust for real they are not going to wait until five minutes before you normally leave for work.

You also have to work on your acting. Depending on if you own or rent your home I would go with a frantic or an annoyed tone.

I would not elaborate on details unless pressed for them. If you are asked if you will be coming in later in the day you can respond with something like “I dunno how long it’s going to take them and once they are done I have to clean up all of this water, see what is damaged can call the insurance company.” Go for an overwhelmed/exasperated tone here.

And that should get you out of work for the day!
