Receptionist - good or bad job for slackers?

I spend a lot of time thinking about new jobs. This is mostly because I tend to get fired every 6 to 12 months, depending on how long it takes a company to figure out that they have been paying me for nothing.

Most jobs are either good for slackers or bad for slackers. But receptionist positions tend to vary. Sometimes, they can be perfect slacker jobs. Sometimes, not so much.

For instance, I know a slacker that would like to get paid to write. She took a job answering phones in an office for $15 an hour. Turns out, only two people worked out of that office and they were rarely there. And the phone rarely rang. So she basically got paid $15 and hour to sit in an office by herself and write all day.

And I have known people that have jobs answering phones were the phones starting ringing at 8am sharp and never stop. Clearly, this type of receptionist job is one that you want to stay away from.

In my experience, if they ask you how many phone likes you can handle at once or what it the average number of calls per day that you have answered — you need to RUN! And if they do not ask those types of questions then it is pretty safe to say it is a decent job for slackers.
