Being sick excuse #35 - laryngitis
Part of being a good slacker is knowing what ailments are running rampant in the office. At my office as well as at my girlfriend’s office that ailment is laryngitis. That means it would be a fine time for one of us to call in with laryngitis!
Laryngitis is most commonly characterizes as causing you to have a hoarse voice or the complete loss of the voice. So, remember that when you are calling in.
Common symptoms:
- Hoarseness
- Weak voice
- Tickling sensation and rawness of your throat
- Sore throat
- Dry throat
- Dry cough
Laryngitis is usually a temporary problem that either improves by itself or clears after treatment - so you can’t get too many days off with this. I mean, there really is not a lot of discomfort with it. You might have a fever with it though, so you might be able to leverage that.
When you go back to work and they ask how you got better, pick one of the following ’self care’ tips for those with laryngitis and say that is what you did…
The following self-care steps may relieve the symptoms of laryngitis and reduce strain on your voice:
- Moisten your throat. Try sucking on lozenges, gargling with salt water or chewing a piece of gum.
- Use a humidifier. Keep the air throughout your home moist.
- Avoid talking or singing too loudly or for too long. If you need to speak before large groups, try to use a microphone or megaphone.
- Give your voice a break. Rest your voice when possible.
- Seek voice training. Consider this if you’re a singer or if your voice quality is important.
- Avoid whispering. This puts even more strain on your voice than does normal speech.
