Slacker tip #120 – what to do about a slow computer

Posted by: the complete slacker on Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

At my job I have a really, really and I mean really slow computer. It’s a Dell laptop, so it is no surprise that is it slow, that is hooked up to a monitor and a keyboard. See, these fools that I work with expect me to take the laptop home every night to work (for no extra pay). I fool them by taking it home to play on line in my living room as I hijack a neighbor’s wifi signal.

Anyways, this computer is exceptionally slow. And last week I was trying to blog and take some money paying opps from other sites when people kept coming to my desk. It was a major pain in the ass. What was I going to do about the slow ass computer as it posed quite the problem for this slacker. I mean, what if I had a blog up and the boss was coming to my desk and I could not get it off there fast enough?

Here are some of the steps I took to ensure that I would remain getting paid $21/hr to do nothing at work all day.

First I made sure to but that little “clear desktop” (or whatever it is called ) button on my taskbar next to the ‘start’ menu. It might be called ‘show desktop” – regardless, with one click everything you have up will be minimized to your task bar to show nothing but the desktop.

Then I resized some things on my task bar by pulling things over to the left so that if I had more than on internet explorer window open that they would sit on top of each other and just say “2 internet explorer” instead of stating what I was actually looking at.

Then I resized my internet explorer windows so that they were smaller than my Outlook window. Then, what I did was layer it so that I could just see the bottom of the internet explorer window when the Outlook window was on top. That way I would know when a page was loaded. So, I would click on a link then click on Outlook to hide it. This way if someone came to my desk they would be less likely to notice the internet window.

And those are the things that I have done to make sure that I do not get caught being a slacker on my slow ass computer at work. If you have any tips on how to manage a slow computer at work when trying to be a slacker – please share!
