Being sick excuse #11 – the allergic reaction

I know what you’re thinking – you’ll never be able to get out of work with an excuse like that.

It’s not so much about the excuse as it is about making your co-workers think you have something gross that they do not want to see. For instance, if you call in sick and leave it at that you are probably going to get some crap from your boss and co-workers. But if you call in saying you’ve been having some projectile vomit issues, they are going to be glad you want to stay home and will insist on it. The key is perception. You need them to believe that you are gross and have some kind of nasty funk that they do not want to get near.

Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for you, I have had many various allergic reactions in my time. Once, when I was a kid, I drank a gallon of apple juice in a matter of hours. My face swelled up that night and stayed that way for 2 days. Some have indeed been nasty and funk filled while others have just been a menace to me. Usually the really gross ones last a few days.  And usually I do not know 100% what caused it, which is good cause people will ask you and you can just say “I’m not sure but I’m working on narrowing it down.”

Excuse – Allergic reaction

Symptoms - Typical symptoms include hives, funky rashes, itching, possible fever, some swelling.

Limitations –The symptoms can develop slowly but can last for a few days. So if you are planning on developing a funky, puss-oozing itchy rash, you should start the itching at least a day before you call in with it.

Time – It usually runs its course in 24 – 48 hours, but can last up to a week. I am currently getting over a itchy rash that has lasted for a week and counting.

Dialogue – Try not to pinpoint one certain thing that caused it, as most people that get allergic reactions are not 100% sure of the cause. You can tell them that you are trying to narrow it down. They will probably want to know if it has happened before, and you should tell them yes and that it seems to get worse every time. This will lay the groundwork for future allergic reactions with more time off.

Frequency - You could get away with this quite often. However, your boss may want to know why you are simply treating it with Benadryl Allergy when you can go to the doctor and get a steroid shot to clear it up. So, be careful in how often you do it and how severe you say the reaction is.

Action – You can work this for as much time off as you need, just remember to make them think that it is so gross that you cannot come in. For instance, a nasty puss-oozing rash on your face, swelling of the face and so on.

Notes - The great thing about this excuse is that you shouldn’t need a doctor’s note. However you may have a boss that insists you go to the doctor for a steroid shot.

P.S. We think you’d look super cute in one of these shirts.
