Slacker tip #58 - be on your best behavior in the beginning

The dream job is one where you can get away with doing absolutely nothing work related and still take home a nice sized paycheck. Unfortunately you cannot show up at a new job and begin slacking from day one. This is a sad but true reality.

See, you have to trick them into thinking that you are a hard working mo’fo. How do you do this when you want to spend your day cruising YouTube and blogging?

Easy.

Just be on your best behavior in the beginning.

I usually am on my best behavior for about 2 weeks when I start a new job. Sometimes though the charade has to go on a bit longer as it is important to be on your best behavior during your training. The good news is that most office jobs don’t have more than 2 weeks worth of training. And by training I mean having a boss or a co-worker sitting with you and watching your every move.  Once that period is over you get a one-way ticket on the freedom train to complete slacker. It’s such a beautiful metamorphosis.

You may think that reverting to your old slacker ways after a couple of weeks will never in a million years work. Well, trust me, it will. See, people see what they want to see. And if they have observed you being a busy little worker bee for a couple of weeks then when they walk by your desk after that they will see you being a busy little worker bee. Never mind the fact that you’re on the internet all freaking day.

This little technique has worked for me for years. In fact, that is how I spent a year at two different jobs getting paid to do nothing. It is really a lot easier to do than you might think.  Especially if you are a temp.
