Slacker tip #56 - change the clock

Posted by: the complete slacker on Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Okay, so this is a totally easy and totally obvious tip but a lot of times it’s the obvious stuff that gets overlooked.

Do you have a clock in your office that everyone uses? Chances are this won’t work if you work at a large company. However, if you work in a small office with a clock in the room there’s a pretty good chance that you boss keeps an eye on that clock when people arrive and leave. So, maybe you should speed up that clock a little bit so you can leave early! The trick is not getting caught doing it. And sometimes those buggers are hard to get back up on the wall. Another possible downfall is that you could be counted tardy the next morning.

This works best if you have a schedule where you get to work before the boss. This way you won’t get counted tardy for the fast clock and you’ll get to leave early!

Eventually the sped up clock will get noticed. Usually it’s by the office brown-noser. And you’ll probably get blamed if your slacking tendencies are known. If you speed up the clock every few days without getting caught though it will look like the clock is wonky and you’ll be off the hook!

You might think this is lame. Amatuer, even. It’s true. This was one of the things I used to do in my early days of slacking. I have evolved and found much better ways to be a slacker. That being said, you can’t go wrong with something that is effective.

So, go ahead, speed up those office clocks…..but not a lot! It will be totally obvious if you speed it up a hour or two. The key here is being subtle. Remember, getting paid for 15 minutes that you didn’t work is better than working for those 15 minutes.
