Slacker tip #40 - fool them by applying for a promotion
As an accomplished slacker, I know that the key to being successful at getting paid to do nothing is to show people what they want to see. An easy way to do this is to appy for open positions at work that would be a promotion for you. You might be thinking “No way, that will mean more work and less time to goof off!” but you could not be farther from the truth.
While it is true that most promotions come carrying the baggage of new duties, they also come with something else. A step up on the totem pole. You get an air of superiority and authority, even if you are not going into a manager position. And if you act like you are a superior, then your co-workers will think you are their superior. This is perfect because then you get to implement the holy grail of getting paid to do nothing - DELEGATING. Yes, that’s right. You get to delegate work to others. They will do your work while you play Tetris online.
But that is not the only perk here. By apply for the promotion you are showing your bosses that you are a “go-getter” and that you have drive and ambition and that you can most likely work with little supervision due to your drive and ambition. Even if you do not get the promotion you have gained this. You will see a decrease in the drive-bys that your boss does to see what you are doing. Yup, seeing what they want to see.
And, the most obvious perk is a pay increase. You can increase the amount that you get paid to do nothing. Is there anything better than that? Besides the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show?
I applied for an open position at my job just last week. And if you remember, I only do a few hours of work each month. I scored an interview for this position that I BS’d my way through. See, I had looked up successful interview tips online and it told me to ask questions that make you look smart/ambitious/etc. and it worked like a charm.
