Slacker tip #37 - more ways to access blocked sites at work
One of the most frustrating things at jobs is punching in a website only to have a screen come back telling you that it is blocked by the internet Nazis.
Now, when I type in things like MySpace and YouTube, I fully expect them to be blocked, but I try it anyway. What is really frustrating is when something random is blocked for seemingly no reason. For instance, I was going to look at www.laurapausini.com the other week to see if the Italian hottie has any tour dates coming up. Imagine my surprise when the screen did not return an image of sexiness but a message telling me it was blocked. After my Pussyact Dolls debacle a few weeks back, I thought it might be blocked for reasons of ‘sexy attire’ like the PCD site. Nope. It was blocked as “chat/message board” – even though there is not a chat room or message board on the site.
After this atrocity, I decided to look up ways to access blocked sites at work. It seems that the easiest way is to remote connect to a home computer and access sites that way. This can be done using something like gotomypc.com or pcanywhere. The most appealing thing about going with this option is that it apparently doesn’t leave a browser history for your network Nazis to see. So, if this works for you, then what you’re doing would virtually be invisible, unless of course the Nazis have a keystroke logger on your computer or are doing that sneaky thing where they can remote into your computer and see what you are doing in real time. I suspect my job doesn’t have either or I would have been fired by now.

And don’t forget to read the comments, where users offer up some great tips of their own! I liked the suggestion of trying to access the secured version of a site instead. So, https:// instead of http:://
Good luck!
