Slacker tip #27 - how to fake being an overachiever

Nothing says I’m a kiss-ass overachiever like getting to work early or staying late. But who wants to do that?

You don’t have to! You can look like a hard-working, dedicated employee just by being sneaky with email.

Set up your email at work to send out automated email messages for you at certain times - like, oh, say really early or really late in the work day. People will notice the time stamp of when the email was sent and think you’re a real go-getter. As a bonus you can put on your timesheet that you were working when you were not - I mean, you have the email time stamp to prove you were there, right? Right!

If you’re using this for the morning, it will work best if you leave your desk the day before looking like it would if you were at work in the morning. For instance, in the past, I have put a coffee cup (which I only drink in the morning) at my desk when I leave for the day so that the next morning people will think I am in the office somewhere. Now, clearly this would not work if I was leaving early in the day or something.

In my experience this automated email thing works best in the morning, as people are notoriously late or too self-absorbed to notice what time you arrive. But they always seem to know when you’re leaving. Only plan on doing this once a week? Go for Mondays as that is when the most people are late. Trust me.
