Invent a kid project update #4
I can now say with certainty that when you have a child as an excuse to leave work it is treated differently than if you leave for other reasons.
I tried to create scenarios for each that were as similar as possible. Both involved spur of the moment having to leave work at around the same time of day (2:00 pm-ish). Scenario one involved leaving to pick up a sick child. Scenario two involved spur of the moment needing to go home because of feeling sickly.
Scenario one went off beautifully. No dirty/stern looks, a concern for the well-being of the child and a follow-up upon returning hoping that he was feeling better.
Scenario two - not so much. It got an annoyed/stern look, a bit of a huff and then a request, actually more of a demand to come into work early the rest of the week to make up the missed time. My normal shift starts at 9am, and I was asked to be here by 7:30 but I got here at 8:00 am. When I arrived, the boss looked at me, looked down at her watch then back at me as I passed.
Conclusion - as suspected, it’s easier to miss work if you have children.
