Slacker tip #3 - more on how to do nothing at work and get away with it

One of the biggest problems a complete slacker will encounter in the quest to do nothing at work and get paid for it is the nosy coworker. We all have them. And it blows.

But there are some precautions you can take to avoid getting ratted on by someone.

Chances are, you’re going to be sitting in a cubicle. And with a cubicle comes a cubicle mate, sometimes referred to as a “cube mate,” but I like to think of them more as the only thing standing between me and a day full of playing on the internet. Cubicle mates are most dangerous when they can sneak up behind you and see your monitor screen before you can see them. At every single office job I have had ( and that number is quite high), the computer is always set up so that anyone passing by has an unrestricted view of what you’re looking at. This is a serious problem for a complete slacker as the boss could also see what you are doing, or the lack thereof.

The first thing to do once you start a job is to rearrange things. It will be in your best interest to put that monitor in a position so that no one will be able to see it passing by. If possible, the best choice of action is to position the monitor so that you will see someone before they even have a chance to see your monitor.

Windows (not the Microsoft one) can also pose a problem because if your monitor is facing the window then it will create a reflection. You do not want this to happen! At the job that I just started this week I have a window right behind me. I love it as it gives me something to look at when I am turned around day dreaming. However, I noticed immediately that it gave my boss, who is 3 cubes away, a perfect view of my screen due to the reflection. What to do? Simple. Turn down the brightness on the screen. The only downside to this is that your screen is a bit dull and it’s probably not too great for your eyesight, but you’re going to be daydreaming anyway, right?
